Neon Goby (Elacatinus oceanops) Bohlke & Robbins 1968
The Neon Goby only grows up to 2"
and is efficient at cleaning parasites, dead scales and other irritants from their fellow fish. They work well in a
reef environment as well as an all fish, no coral tank. Regardless of where the other fish are from, they will recognize
this goby as a cleaner fish.
Let's compare this fish to the cleaner wrasse from Hawaii. The goby will STAY alive for 2 years, their natural
life span, and the cleaner wrasse will inevitably die in a few months. The goby will breed in captivity in a 20 gallon
tank, thus keeping wild populations full. The cleaner wrasse has been taken out of the ocean in such huge numbers, that
the local Hawaiian fish have more illnesses. So ethically, THIS Neon Goby is the correct choice and will eat other meaty
foods like mysis, cyclopeeze, minced fish, flake, etc. Even when fed preparations, they will STILL do their cleaning
job, since it is just in their nature.
More on breeding them. The female will lay her eggs on a flat rock or some other surface and
once hatched, you can feed them Brachinus rotifers and Euplotes which is a type of plankton that is small enough for them
to eat. Just look on the internet for suppliers. In about a month, your babies are totally developed! Needless
to say, this is a great nano tank fish.
FACTOID: The Neon Goby will set up "shop" in one area of the tank an as fish will swim by,
see them and "tilt" their body as a signal for the goby to get to work.
